The Glenartney has been awarded 'The Best Performer 2007' by the Green Tourism Business Scheme.
The Glenartney was judged on the energy performace, green grading and efforts towards sustainable tourism in Scotland.
The Glenartney consumes a huge amount of energy in turn this creates a large carbon footprint.
Over the last 3 years we have been able to slightly reduce the primary footprint (gas, coal, electricity and oil ) to approximately 22000 kg of CO2 whilst doubling our occupancy levels. The average UK household has a primary footprint of approximately of 9500 kg.
The Glenartney has been given an 'A' rating by the GTBS for carbon emissions per bed night- this stands at 4.09kg.
Most of us are here because Arran is such a wonderful place. We feel we need to do our bit to conserve it .
We, as with most other people, want to contribute but we don’t want it to impact our lives or lively hoods! We don’t want to pay too much extra or forego any luxuries or comforts. We use our closed season to source and test products and services that will help reduce the impact. Some we do adopt, others will have to wait until a more viable product is found.
WHAT HAVE WE BEEN ABLE TO DO SO FAR?
*Double glazing units have been fitted in all of the windows, unfortunately the old windows were beyond repair.
*Our cleaning products are environmentally friendly
*Ecover guest shower and hand gels in dispensers.
*Kitchen Waste products are composted and appropriate litter is recycled
*Water inhibitors are in all toilet cisterns
*We recycle old towels and linen into dusters and cloths. Other items given to charity
*Full loft and pipe insulation, new efficient boiler system has been installed
*Low energy bulbs are used where possible and push button timers are used in hallways
*We buy locally produced food and products when possible
*Where ever possible recycled stationary is used and reused
*The car is only used when totally necessary– 5000 miles a year
We try first to
Reduce
then
Re-use
finally
Recycle
